Course Description

Do you already have experience as a maker, designer or engineer with traditional design tools? Come join us to learn about advanced design techniques like parametric modeling and topographical optimization that can only be used with 3D printing. By the end of the course, you will receive a complimentary 3D print of your design provided by Formlabs!

Are you new to 3D printing design? Join our Beginner Design course.

Course participants who attend all sessions (or view the recordings) and complete all assignments will receive a certificate of completion from 3DPrint.com.

Course Schedule

Thursday, April 6
2-3pm ET (11-12pm PT)

Speaker: Spencer Wright, Product at nTopology

Programmatic Modeling

A focus on topographical optimization led by the head of product at nTopology, a 3D lattice design optimization software.

Thursday, April 13
2-3pm ET (11-12pm PT)

Speaker: Jesse Coors-Blankenship, CEO, Frustum

Functional Generative Design

Apply the design principles covered in the live session. For inspiration on the optimization and structural topography that this software is capable of, read this article. In Chrome, load Frustum Generate and clone one of the designs of your choice. From there, experiment with changes in resolution and face groups. Report back on your results in this week’s forum discussion.

Thursday, April 20
2-3pm ET (11-12pm PT)

Speaker: Tara Anderson, Director of Project Management, 3D Systems

Texture + 3D Printing

Including color and wrapping

April 20-27

Design Challenge

Participants will create and refine a final design, based on a set of specifications, that will be entered into a class-wide contest. The winning design will be announced in an article on 3Dprint.com.
